Hey, USA Wrestling:
If you change anything for the next state meet at Selland Arena, change this:
Stop making the coaches and wrestlers run laps around the stadium.
It is stupid. There is no reason for it. USA Wrestling is just having fun being jerks to the coaches and wrestlers.
Why does USA Wrestling make the kids and coaches go in on one side of the arena and out on the other?
Why? Can someone explain this to me? The traffic flow cannot possibly be the problem; there are about eight doors over there.
You could lock the ‘out’ doors and save yourself an extra security guard. Check badges going in, let anyone out who wants to get out.
No problem.
But WHY? Why does USA Wrestling insist on this errant policy?
While it may seem silly to postulate, the reason is likely this: USA Wrestling likes being jerks to wrestling coaches and wrestlers.
Why was the line so long to get coaches’ credentials? Why? We all know who the coaches are.
Maybe it’s part of how USA Wrestling makes you pay them money to take a WORTHLESS class to get a certification to coach.
I have seen team mom’s with Bronze level certification while respected high school coaches are Copper Coaches.
Does this mean that a team mom with an hour and $60 to flush down the toilet is a better coach than a high school coach who doesn’t have an hour and $60 to throw away?
Does USA Wrestling hold a grudge? Does USA Wrestling want the wrestling coaches to suffer?
Just open the damn door and let people go up and down. It’s not hard. It will not cause any confusion.
The only people missing out will be the sadists who think it’s funny to make people run around in circles.
I won’t even mention the OBNOXIOUS policy at Selland arena of not letting ANY FOOD into the place so they can rape the wrestlers and coaches one $6 hot dog at a time. Why doesn’t USA Wrestling try to help out the coaches and wrestlers?
Why does USA Wrestling have it in for the competitors and coaches, why do they HATE everyone?
Why do they steal our money? To buy Brand New TRAILORS!!! Those must be expensive.
Open the damn doors. Stop making your customers run in circles. Open the damn doors.

This has to be one of the best rants in a long long time! I wish I would have known which coach you were so I could have sat and watched you huff and puff all around the gym in a USA hating tirade! Classic.
The food thing is so true. USA, please remember that most of the spenders at your food court are the wrestlers themselves. Not all wrestlers want to eat greasy pizza or a over priced hot dog between matches. Lower the prices and get food in there that will enhance the wrestlers ability to recover.

Coach, This has been a HUGE fight for me with the Arena (Food, and cost of it) . They do have a food Vendor that pays to sell in the arena, and they alone pick what they selll, and at what price. The door issue I will address, and get changed. As for the arena floor, because it is such a big area, we have not been asked people to leave it after the match. We just ask they keep the mats clear.
Question: If I can get the Arena Food Vendor to sell good stuff??:) What stuff would you like to see served?
PS: The Trailors cost us 5,000.00 USED,and painted. We our a Non for profit 501c3, so in kind donation help us, and the seller.

First off, I don't know everything, however, I'm pretty sure that USA wrestling has absolutely no control over Selland Arena's Concession stands. They then in turn have no control over the policies put in place by Selland Arena as far as letting food in.
The last couple of years the USA tournaments at Selland arena have been way improved, Im sure a lot of it has to do with controlling the flow of traffic. The place isn't that big.

The only solution seems to be that California USA Wrestling should build a venue to hold tournaments.

I can tell you that last year I was prohibited from bringing in water in a baby bottle. I was stopped at the door and forced to dump out the water, go inside and buy cold bottled water (to mix formula, yah, not gonna happen) or use nasty warm tap water with God knows what growing on the faucet in the ladies room to feed my baby. I stayed home this year. Selland sucks. I spend thousands of dollars every year going to USA events with my 5 sons and our club wrestlers, but next year we may skip it altogether. There are other family friendly venues the same weeknd.

Bunch of spoiled crybabies...
A. That's the trade off for getting to sit in a very comfortable, climate controlled arena. I would much rather walk around the arena(or get smart and sit by the floor entrance) , than sit in a high school gym and break my back in bleachers all day.
B. Leave your food in the car, give junior the keys after his match and have him hit up the ice chest.
Your kids get to wrestle in a professional sports arena. That's like your little leaguer getting to play in a minor league stadium 3 times a season. When I was a kid (wasn't that long ago), we had to wait until UOP to wrestle in an arena. The set up is fine, the food sucks and is expensive, but have you ever dined in Rabobank? Not much better.
Good job CA-USA! Ever notice how they take the criticism and work to fix things? I've been coaching at the state tournaments for about ten years now, and there are noticeable improvements made with each event.
Lady with the baby, I'll see you at the movies. hahaha just teasing.

The last two years USA Wrestling has been great at accepting and addressing feedback in the online forums. Thanks for explaining things, it's helpful to understand the rationale behind decisions.
I found the tournament last weekend to be well run and a good experience, with one caveat.
The question I have is, why aren't the tournaments broken up to move things along? They could be separated by venue (different locations), or they could be separated by day (all kids on Saturday, all cadets on Sunday). The Cadets only used four mats on Saturday, which significantly slowed things down. 10 hours and two matches is a real drag (cadets 140 and up), and makes me think long and hard about whether to chance repeating the experience. Separating the different tournaments (kids Greco, Junior Fila Greco, Girls freestyle, Cadet freestyle) and using a high school gym with six mats, the tournaments could be done in one day, especially if the number of registrations was capped. Wouldn't it be cheaper as well if we didn't have to use Selland Arena? Even if the same location was used in order to get economies of infrastructure and set up, separating kids Greco on Saturday and Cadet freestyle on Sunday, or some variation, would significantly cut down on time and cost for your users.
If the problem was an unanticipated number of walk up registrations, increase the difference between pre-registration fee and walk up fee. Make more incentive.
A second question is about scheduling. With the crowded schedule, I'm sure it's extremely challenging to make as few people unhappy as possible, but does CA USA wrestling consider SAT dates and think about final exams before scheduling major tournaments? Greco state is on one of the few SAT weekends, and is immediately prior to finals week. I know of a couple potential placers who wanted to go, but won't be able to.
Overall, the state tournaments have been great, and I'm glad my kids have been participating. Thanks.

I have to concur on the SAT conflict. I understand that there is a test in May, however every extra month of school is important for this test. My son will not participate due to the SAT conflict. Greco is one of his strong points. But, that is life.

Have to agree with you up to a point. We did the ice chest thing. Subway down the street (what no $5 footlongs) was a quick fix. The only downer was two matches in 10 hours. After number two, we could have left and had an earlier dinner and made life a little easier. Seat are better than bleachers, $14 to get in each day is a bit steep.

I have been a usa member a longtime and credit the usa program with my sons success so I am a supporter but i have to agree on 2 things 1. high cost of foods maybe more salads ,fruit, healthier sandwiches that are tasty 2. the length of some of these tourney's is too long .
My only question is how can roller productions get almost 3000 kids through in 3 days and it takes almost same amount of time for 2x less just a question I 'M NOT TRYING TO BITE THE HAND THAT FEEDS and it s done in portions so people can get something to eat rest and relax and not be stuck in the venue all day.tournament time has always been a peeve with me but can we learn from roller and maybe incorporate some of that to usa for big events just curious cut time down make more cost effective for for the coaches ,parents ,and kids. USA has always taken care of the kids but times are rough and like any organization they have to adjust through us all of us and our opinions on this forum which i think counts

Is it to pat yourself or your child on the back, Rag about tournaments instead of sacking up and hosting one of your own, or in your case see if you can match wits with Lawson or ex-coach?

The correct answer is C. The question: All of the following are legitimate reasons to post on the forum, EXCEPT? It does not behoove anyone to tangle with those two.
By the way Cobra is the weakest Stallone movie of all time.....Cobra makes Judge Dread look like Schidler's List.

CC sounding a bit ornery in your old age, or maybe you just don't recognize a tongue in cheek comment when you see one.
And no, though it might not be Stallones finest piece Cobra is quite a bit above Judge Dread. Judge Dread set Superhero movies back 10 years. And though Sandra Bullock has held up quite a bit longer, I've always had a thing for tall blondes.

USA cal vs Roller
Jack brings out about 30 employees plus hand selected refs that believe in the great sport of wrestling. I see the same employees in Tulsa as in Reno. I also see the same refs in Reno as in Tulsa. The refs show professionalism or the won't last in Jacks organization. If you don't sign up on time or make weight you don't wrestle. Jack knows and understands that a kid that feels "cheated" will return the favor with a bad attitude the best kids show up knowing they will get quality matches against quality opponents. Champions get a huge trophy along with a hand written bracket plus get to shake hands with great legends like Danny Hodge and Ken Shamrock
In Tulsa my kid wrestled kids coached by Pat Smith, Jamill Kelly, Kenny Monday, coach Miron (Russian badass) Keith Walton. John Smith was there cheering on his Kid. So there is so much more than just being organized and getting the kids through. ( biggest help here is the numbering system and the brackets are done at the table). To top it off jack gave USA Nevada 2000 donation.). We went to the team Nevada gym for some extra practice so this can be another topic
Ray might agree with me it's all about the management.

My only concern is why we started using Selland Arena seemingly as a go-to for all state tournaments. Is there any reason why we stopped using high schools that had enough space (eg Lemoore) to accommodate the populace that goes to the events?

i have to jump in this one,
food is not that big of deal (for me), but walking down to coach a match real quick and not being able to go back up really sucks. You walk all the way around and by the time you get to the top you see another wrestler coming up. You then, run back down just to go all the way around again.
Then you have security walking around telling you to clear the mat. Mats would be alot clearer if people would be able to walk back up instead of going all the way around.

Chavez-crew: I agree wholeheartedly, I've reffed a few of Rollers tournaments, and they are without a doubt the best run tournaments around. His people are well trained veterans, and it shows from beginning to the very end of a tournament. Other people should take copious notes ;-)

Ok, lets talk about improvements.
First off, we are not running back and forth from Selland to Vasquez Hall anymore.
Secondly, we can find our bouts online using trackwrestling.com and I can do it from my iPhone and even figure out what mat my kid is on before it is announced over the PA.
Third, the venue is great. The security people might just give some too much of a hard time but hey, that's their only job in life. In my classroom I have to maintian order and control; I don't like to do it but I have to. Its their job; don't worry about it and let them do their job.
Fourth, the Bronze card and Copper card thing is a way for everyone to protect the kids. I'd rather be inconvenienced a million times than to have a student subjected to an abusive coach or a petafile. (whether or not this is the best method of getting rid of that element I don't know but at least its better than nothing.) Also, coaches in the school programs now have to be certified in the same manner. Look for coaching bands to be given out in the near future with the same or similar credentials needed to verify coaching certification.
Finally, regarding the food, if you don't want to spend your money on their food, don't. Vote with your feet. If the vendor isn't making money they will lower the prices. The times I walked by the concession stand though, the line was rediculous; so I am assuming that not everyone was displeased.
As for the lady with the baby, make up the formula ahead of time and then ask to see their supervisor when they tell you to take the breast milk out of your baby bag. I would suggest using the phrase "breast milk" very loudly and repeatedly while asking to see their supervisor. That will get the point across.
Otherwise, the cost of living is going up. We all have to deal with it and fork out the money.
Great job CA USAW for hosting the events and improving on the tournaments.

Obviously, "fight" has no concept about convention centers, arenas, and stadiums established policies on how security and crowd control will be handled. Minimizing liability problems is the biggest thing for any venue. It may not be the best, but it's the "Arenas" procedure. I'm sure USA wrestling may want something different, but in return for using the venue, they must follow the rules and conditions established by those who manage the facility. Just like the issue with bringing in food and who is allowed to sell food in the arena, is not USA wrestling's choice.
So, if you have a problem ("fight") with how things are handled, I believe the most appropriate place to complain is to the Selland Arena management. It was a great tournament, and as a parent am greatly appreciative of the experience USA wrestling provides for our kids. Great job guys!
I had to put my two cents in, because it gets really old reading the ridiculous, uneducated comments and complaints. Quit being such haters!

Ray,
Thank you. I'm not all that upset. I just wanted to make a point that in the ten years I have been doing state tournaments through CA-USAW the improvements have been tremendous. I'm not all that upset really but I do take offense to the fact that someone trashes something I worked at and gave my time and effort to make better. Several years back I had complaints and for just cause. I complained but at the same time I always offered my help to make for a better tournament and experience. By volunteering the tournament is better and more help makes for lighter work.
