FOREST GROVE, Ore. – Isaiah Jimenez (165) and Anthony Gonzalez (285) kicked off the 2011-12 season in impressive fashion Sunday, capturing individual championships in their respective weight classes to lead the San Francisco State wrestling team at the Mike Clock Senior Open on the campus of Pacific University. Overall, the Gators enjoyed a highly successful debut meet as 10 grapplers placed in eight of the 10 weight divisions.

In addition to the two titles by Jimenez and Gonzalez, SF State also received a second-place finish by Arman Ostadsharif (174), while Julian Perez (133) and Andrew Reggi (197) each took third. Rounding out the list of Gator placers were Dylan Phillipy (4th – 149), Andy Yu (5th – 125), Daniel Flores (5th – 141), Kyle Lew (5th – 149) and Matt Negrete (6th – 174).

Jimenez, ranked sixth in the Division II preseason individual poll at 165, opened with an 11-4 decision over Pacific's Chris Harlin, followed by a 10-6 triumph over Wallin Kario, an unattached wrestler from Highline CC. The Gator junior kept the momentum going with a 5-2 victory over Southern Oregon's Cody Jones in the semifinals, before edging Bruce Balcita of Pacific, 3-2, in the championship bout.

Gonzalez (285) began the day with a 6-0 blanking of Yakima Valley CC's Alan Brown before recording a pin of Pacific's Jared Bridgewater with three seconds remaining in the first period of the semifinal match. The SF State senior then cemented his first-ever collegiate title with another victory by fall, pinning Ricky Carter of YVCC at the 6:40 mark in the final bout.

Ostadsharif (174), meanwhile, opened with consecutive first-period pins over YVCC's Layne Gandruel (1:20) and Steve Conn of Clackamas CC (1:54), before posting a 5-1 decision over fellow teammate Negrete in the semifinals. The Gator senior's title hopes came up just short, however, as Clackmas' Trent Noon posted a tough 2-0 victory in the championship final.

Dylan Phillipy (149) recorded two pins on Sunday at the Mike Clock Senior Open.

In a pair of third-place matches, Perez (133) emerged victorious with a 5-3 decision over Embry-Riddle's Trace Gutknect, whom he defeated in the opening bout of the main draw, while Reggi (197) registered a second-period pin against Sanjay Rekhi of Douglas College at 4:49.

Phillipy (149) collected a pair of pins in the consolation draw, but fell short in the third-place match after suffering a 10-7 setback at the hands of Clackmas' Beau Roberts.

SF State returns to the mat on Friday, Nov. 11 when it holds the annual Gator Alumni meet, starting at 7 p.m. in The Swamp.
