Here is what we sent to all the officials.

    Dear Officials,

I am sending this email out in response to many emails/texts I have received over the past few days regarding the new rules for freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling that were issued by FILA at the extraordinary congress held on this past Saturday. The biggest question has been whether or not we will be instituting these rules immediately or if we will be waiting until next year. USA Wrestling held an age group committee meeting this evening and they decided that the new rules will be implemented immediately for all age groups within USA Wrestling.

What does this mean for us? It means that the new rules will be instituted at all regional and national tournaments taking place from this point forward. As a result, we as a state will be implementing these rules at the next California state event which will include Kids Freestyle and Cadet/Junior Greco-Roman. This event is in two weeks which means there is a weekend of local events taking place this upcoming weekend on May 25. There is no mandate to institute the new rules at the local events taking place this upcoming weekend. This will be left to the discretion of the local association directors, head officials, etc. Whatever decision is made, please keep in mind that the new rules will be in effect the following weekend.

The president of USWOA, Rick Tucci, is presently working on a bulleted list of the new rules for each style to make the transition as clear as possible. These lists should be made available in the next few days. Once we have access to them, Robert Valerio or myself will send them out to you. In the meantime, you can read an overview of the major rule changes by reading the article on the home page of the FILA website at http://fila-official.com/

In addition to this information, it is our intention to hold a rules clinic on the evening of Friday, May 31 at the conclusion of weigh-ins (8:00 PM) at Selland Arena. This rules clinic is not only for officials working the event, but it will be open to coaches and athletes as well. It is our hope to clarify as much as we can so that everyone is on the same page. If I may add my opinion, I have to say that these rules seem to make a lot more sense than the last set and I believe that coaches and wrestlers will be quite pleased with the change once they have had the opportunity to compete under this set of rules.

Thanks for your time and attention. We look forward to seeing you all at the clinic two Fridays from now.
