Default B1G: Welch vs St. John at Big10s - Did the "strange" call effect the outcome?

Unfortunately Flo doesn't have the clip in their highlight reel for the match, but during the Welch vs St. John match, there was a non-escape call that was really strange if not really bad. I actually like the ref in the match and he's a good ref, but essentially Welch escaped (completely broke free) shot in on a single, tried to finish the single for a while, they go out of bounds and the ref puts Welch down with a "no escape" call. I think it could have effected the match, but who knows.

    Anyone else see that?

This is all Flo gives us:

i want to say that it affected the outcome but really st.john cut him as soon as they restarted so there wouldnt have been much more time on the clock after the TD to get that escape

I watched the match and there definately was separation and Welch had the 1 pts esc. That being said, St. John got in on the leg and finished the shot for the win. Hope Jason wins it all at the NCAA's

Wait I had it wrong, Welch had very clear separation coming off bottom, he chased DSJ half way across the mat (very clear separation) dove after him, got countered and then DSJ shot and Jason defended that single for about 20+ seconds. No escape for JW. Here's the kicker as someone pointed out on another board, if there was no escape given, then DSJ locked his hands at least twice during the ensuing action!

Tony, I saw that match, and your portrayal was exactly right. There was complete separation, then the attempted tie-up and take down. Truly a horrible call.

How it may have affected the outcome is debatable. It seemed to me that Welch had a momentary "pause" in the action, perhaps not expecting St John to counter shoot? Hopefully Welch learns from his experience. I one of those who actually thinks he has a decent shot vs Dake.

Gotta say DSJ deserves props in the tournament overall, beating #8 Green, #5 Alton before #2 Welch. This was 2 weeks after he'd been majored by #15 Pena.

I've been a huge Welch fan for years, seeing him out in CA HS matches a number of times. And I originally went to U of Iowa... so have mixed loyalties.

I saw that too . . . if no escape, then St. John's locked hands should have been called.

Add to that, the fact that after DSJ got his takedown he camped out on the legs for about 10 seconds. He should have at the very least be warned for a stall and made to adjust. With such little time I think the ref made a poor call. With a scrambler like JW, they are never out of a match, however as we all know,... you have to be good enough to beat your opponent and the ref. JW didn't help his cause with the lapse in concentration at the end. Good luck JW. Hopefully he take a national title home.

I saw it too and thought it was a horrible call, plain and simple. Welch almost had the reversal, but DSJ kicked out and away, then separated and crossed the mat with what looked to be 10' between the two of them. Welch chased after him, shot, and was countered. He then spent the next 30+ seconds in the splits fighting off what everyone thought was a takedown, only the ref never awarded the 1 escape. It made zero sense to me, as it couldn't have been more clear. After they went out of bounds, the ref returned Welch to the bottom, and to me, it looked as though he was a bit puzzled. Add to this, unless I'm mistaken, all that time Welch spent fending off what was thought to be a DSJ takedown attempt, was really just added to DSJ's riding time, thus erasing the 1 pt for riding time that Welch had amassed. Had Welch been awarded that escape when it occurred, I'm curious if DSJ had accumulated enough riding time to erase the point Welch had earned for riding in the previous round. If not, the outcome was definitely effected.......

He has a tough road to the finals, but hopefully he and DSJ meet again in the semi's and he can avenge it. Dake is an absolute stud, especially at this tournament, but I'd sure like to see he and Welch in the finals.

Iowa call all the way. Looks like JW will get a shot in the semi's if it works out. JW the better wrestler regardless of 0-4 IMO. Three of those were last year and this one so far was an utter rip-off.
