Default A closer look at 132s...

Gilroy's Nikko Villarreal won by far one of the toughest weight groups in California...a great deal of off-season wrestling among this group.

Out of 16 wrestlers 12 them have previously wrestled in a national tournament. Only 2 of them have registered to wrestle in the national tournament. Looks like no repeat for team CA...or the deadline is in two weeks and they plan on going...maybe

Great stuff for the audience in attendance at Rabobank. I agree this was the toughest weight class in the tournament. I also believe if you want to win the whole ball of wax or even place here then you should want to have a deep class like this one. As a parent I was honored to have my son compete with some of the best kids in the state of California and in the nation.

The deep weight class was the result of the elimination of a lower weight class and the redistribution of that weight class to the upper weights. I was frustrated when the change was made at the beginning of the year but it sure made for an interesting year at 132s. If that change was not made Alex might have had a better shot at being a four timer. Just saying change has consequences.

California has had a great deal of success at the NHSCA Nationals. At the senior level, team CA has won it six times and placed in the top 3 almost every year since 1991; however, since the leadership from FLO has decided to run their national event on the same weekend, it's very difficult to send our best team. Can't forget about the struggling economy too. Early fundraising is very important!

If we were sending our top seniors to the NHSCA this year, I am more than confident that we would repeat as champions or at a minimum place in the top 3. Yet, with efforts encouraging Cal wrestlers to attend NHSCA and another effort encouraging kids to go FLO, it's difficult to show true representation or depth as a state. Each tournament will showcase the nation's best, so coaches and parents have to decide which is the better fit for them. Regardless, I want to wish all our kids going to NHSCA and FLO the best and good luck. I am more than confident we'll represent well at each event.

That 132 weight this year was ridiculously deep! Studs all over the bracket...

I agree with this 100% taking away that middle weight class grouped all these guys together. put in 130-135-140 and this splits these guys up. It was a great weight class to watch though.
