Okay, if a high school wrestler goes to mexico this year from winning mexgames and wrestles in international competition representing mexico based on heritage, does that disqualify them from representing USA in the olympics in 2016?

Tim I was told if a wrestler puts on a Mexico singlet, they are considered ineligable for 2 years check on it, I was also told that the powers that be for the mexgames were not forthright in giving the pros and cons to wrestling for Mexico. this is from some one elses mouth so double check it all I could be wrong its happned before.
Summerbear,
The Mexican Youth Olympics is a tournament that is the "Fargo" of Mexico. By winning the Mex-Games and participating in this events means nothing other than you won the Mexican National Championship. It is not an International competition as only Mexican's and of Mexican decent can participate. The Selection process to actually represent Mexico in International Competion is another process in which you must rack up placement points and clinch the #1 ranking going into the specific International event in question. This has not happened in the last five years because two of the qualifying events for "High School" is during our dead period, and another during our CIF Season. A chosen U.S. based wrestler that decides he wishes to participate Internationally, representing Mexico in Worlds or other regional tournaments is in fact making a choice to do so. However, this competion, is not the case. Thus, the real spirit of this tournament in Mexico is to take advantage of a great "free" opporunity to face very serious wrestlers.
I have some additional information about the eligibility, but if you have a kid that has Olympic aspirations in 4 years, then this tourney is not the obstacle.

No, but there are several rules and steps an athlete must go through to represent a country after representing another. International competition is an interesting term. If you wrestle in Mexico against other Mexican citizens or those thought to be Mexican Citizens, it is not an international competition like a Zonal Championship, World Championship or Olympic Games. Example: Jesse Ruiz of Santa Ana, Ca. who has competed for for Mexico in a Zonal Championship and the World Championships would have to go through a process to be eligible to wrestle for the US in one of the same events. Many countries have gone after athletes from other countries to field teams, especially Greece and now England who have an entry in every event has host country, despite the fact they could routinely not come close to qualifying the sport on their own merit.

Per Mitch Hull at USAW, look at the Fila Calendar if your event is not listed you are good. If the event is a Fila sanctioned event then the country you are representing becomes your Fila affiliated country. If you later you wish to change affiliation then you must file a change of affiliation with fila and wait two years before competing at the Fila level.
An example, last year a wrestler competed at our Cadet World Trials. He did not make the team. He then went and competed for another country making the team. No problem still. But then he represented that team at Cadet Worlds. Game over. He now returned to the US and wanted to train at our USOEC and was not permitted due to this affiliation rule. So now he must wait two years to change affiliation. I am not sure what he has decided to do.
If you are deciding what to do thentake a look at the fila site at http://www.fila-wrestling.com/. There is an entire section on eligibility and citizenship, please pay careful attention to the "fila processing fee" to change affiliation, it is substantial.
There is no doubt there are "several rules and steps" that must be followed, as for Mitch Hull, he would never be my source for information, and I doubt LA County would put much value in his word either, for about 4.5 million reasons. You do raise a good point though, going to the source like the USOC, FILA or USAW is far better than going by the posts from the forum. Most of these organizations log calls with a question like this for the record.
its summ bear not summerbear, you make me sound more like a panzy. I have to hold on to whatever dignity I can get! JK
so from my understanding (and homework), because it doesnt just say it forthright, if an athlete competes in a FILA sponsored event (an event listed) then it becomes international competition or what have you and you then "represent" that country. If you do so then other qualifying events like a FILA olympic qualifier, you would not be able to unless you have waited 2 years (in this case it would be four years for 2016) to change "affiliation".
but here is where I couldnt find the rub...is it two years AND pay to switch fila affiliation or would more time account for that change?
or does it boil down to ANY affiliation change at any time would cost you. Then the 2 years becomes just a penalty thing or a wait period.
Another example COULD be if a kid wrestled in a FILA international competition representing germany, didnt make the national team, but then came (because he is a US citizen with german decent) and tried to wrestle in Fargo, he could not. unless he waited 2 years and/or changed affiliation and sold some kidneys :-) right?
Thanks guys I appreciate the feedback and info.
