Thread: No CA team at the National Cadet Duals

Default No CA team at the National Cadet Duals

Just saw on the Mat that the Cadet Duals are being contested in Florida........no team from California? Idaho, Arizona and Washington were able to go,,,,,I know Florida is a long way, but I am surprised that our boys did not get the opportunity to go.....Our State must really be in the financial dumps or our CA USA leaders have some splaining to do. I sure hope that we still field a Junior Duals team.

That is quite a surprise. I have to think that the cost just could not be justified......My kid was on 3 of these team CA dual teams and I have to say. It really elevated his game. What a shame that so many young wrestlers missed out on this great opportunity. In my opinion, this is the best venue to get big time national experience.

Our Cadet Team is in Idaho for what is the Western Duals, apparently along with most of the other western states. It is probably the best opportunity for this group. Freestyle and Greco duals then Western Regional in Freestyle, Greco and Folkstyle. A ton of matches.

The trip should at least be presented to our kids and let people decide if they can afford it.

It had been in the past and there was not only a lack of interest by kids, but by coaches with everything else going on. There was some interest for this year in early May and while it was kind of late, the main person of interest was offered a chance to coach the team in Idaho during the same time and promote the trip for next year, he could not attend. For those of you that are interested in attending as a wrestler or coach next year, please post your name and level of interest and I will bring this up at our board meeting this coming September. Keep in mind that one benefit of the Pocatello regional is that a wresler may qualify for Fargo through this event. California will be attending the Junior Duals, no interest issues there at all.

This is a big fail!!!! How does CA one of the top wrestling states not send a team to the NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS? I know as a father of a participant and a coach of this trip it is invaluable leading up to Fargo for our best kids. I hope the trip is brought back next year because it was one of the best wrestling memories (as far as being with kids) I have had.

Im not picking one side or the other, however, they did get to wrestle probably 14 greco and freestyle duals and then after that they got to wrestle 3 tournaments at western regionals. Freestyle, Greco, and Folkstyle. My guy had more than 32 guys in each of his brackets. So I think in the long run as a team they actually got more matches by going to western regionals and western duals? I understand the prestiege of going to National duals, they are in Florida, and I think that maybe it would just be too expensive for the majority of our kids?? So unless there is someway to defer cost, I think only people who are well off can afford the trip to Florida and it would in the long run be less matches for the guys. I have had kids go to Fargo, I have had kids go to Jr duals and I feel that the Cadet team at Western Regionals got the mat time that they need, maybe not as prestigeous, but high quality mat time nonetheless. Plus more actual matches.

I sort of forgot what the National Duals were all about. This was CA's opportunity to put our best up against the best from the rest of the USA. It does not bode well for our competitive reputation that we elected not to compete. There is nothing better then whipping the midwest states in a game of one on one in their best sport. Nothing wrong with going to Idaho for a week, We did a couple Idaho trips to Holt arena too, but the National duals are awsome.

What happens when your best cant afford it? Then we send less than our best and for what purpose then? Im all for going to national duals, however, as posted earlier there just doesn't seem to be the interest in it? For whatever reason that may be, if the interest is not that high and the cost is very high, then it looks like a tough sell. I mean I'd bet money that if the state of California offered to cover some of the cost for the trip, I'd bet you will have kids volunteering left and right. So I don't think this was a decison that was made all willy nilly. I think the powers to be thought this thing through long and hard and made a decision that was best for the kids that could go? Just my opinion.

I think Pocatello is a great trip. Lot's of matches, many kids had 18, the arena has something like 20 mats down so it's a big venue like Fargo, and the kids ride a bus and get to know each other on the way.

As a parent my primary motivation is, will this trip help my son develop his abilities? Pocatello meets that goal, arguably better than flying to another state for fewer matches.
